Baby Ddrops

The Canadian Paediatric Society and Health Canada recommend that breastfed babies receive a Vitamin D supplement right from birth. Breast milk only contains 10% of the recommended daily intake of Vitamin D. Recent research suggests that failure to do so may lead to vitamin D deficiency and rickets. Read recent New York Times article here.

Most major food retailers and pharmacies sell D-Vi-Sol, a Mead Johnson product. And while it provides the necessary 400 I.U., it does so in a 1 ml solution that contains sugar and other additives (glycerin, water, polysorbate 80, citric acid, vitamin D3, sodium citrate, sodium hydroxide, artificial flavor and artificial caramel color).

An alternative is Baby Ddrops. You simply put 1 drop on your nipple at the beginning of a feed once a day. Your baby gets the 400 I.U. she needs without any additives. It is also a lot easier than a 1 ml dropper, which some babies don't take well.

You can find Baby Ddrops at most natural food or health stores.
