Our morning walk/bike ride always takes us through the local Catholic School, which has a church attached to it. In the front there are various statues of Mary and children, Mary and Jesus, and Jesus on the cross.
Until recently Owen never really noticed these statues. But the last few times he has started asking questions about them.
This has led to some interesting, albeit somewhat confusing conversations about religion.
It also raises an interesting dilemma for me. How do I help him understand what religion is when we do not practice a religion?
One thing I know for sure is that I want him to respect the different beliefs that different religions have. So, I am trying to explain that different people believe different things and that is OK. But I know it is hard for a 4 year-old to really understand this.
To make things more confusing, a few of our books on planets outline the Big Bang theory.
I do think I'm getting through. This morning when we were talking about how some people believe that God created the Earth he commented "no really knows for sure, do they Mama, because no one was there..."
Very true.
